A 22-year longitudinal study1 on autism through midlife found that some areas may improve across adulthood, while other areas, including health and daily functioning, may become more challenging later in life. The study also emphasized that autism is highly individual, so it is not accurate to make one broad statement for every autistic person.
In other words, the better question may not be, “Is autism getting worse?”
A better question may be:
What is making the brain and nervous system work harder right now?
For many people, the answer may include stress, sensory overload, poor sleep, hormonal changes, social demands, school pressure, workplace pressure, masking, burnout, or co-occurring concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, or depression.
When the load keeps building, symptoms can become more noticeable, more intense, or harder to manage.
Why Autism Can Feel Harder With Age

For some autistic children, teens, and adults, autism-related challenges may seem more noticeable as life becomes more complex. This does not always mean autism itself is “worsening.” It may mean the person’s current environment is asking more from their brain and nervous system than they can comfortably manage.
A child who did well in early elementary school may struggle when homework, social rules, transitions, and executive functioning demands increase.
A teen may seem more anxious, irritable, withdrawn, or shut down as friendships, school expectations, sensory demands, and social pressures become more complicated.
An adult may manage for years, then feel depleted after college, career pressure, parenting, marriage, caregiving, chronic stress, or major life changes.

Research2 on autistic adults has found that mental and physical health concerns may strongly affect quality of life. In one follow-up study of autistic adults ages 19 to 80, 71% had at least one co-occurring condition, and 37% met criteria for three or more co-occurring conditions. Mental and physical health difficulties were consistent predictors of poorer quality of life.
That is important because it reminds us not to blame the person.
Sometimes what looks like “worse autism” may actually be an overwhelmed system.
Masking Can Make Autism Feel Worse Over Time
Many autistic people spend years masking.
Masking means hiding autistic traits, copying social behaviors, forcing eye contact, suppressing stims, ignoring sensory discomfort, or trying to appear “fine” even when the nervous system is working overtime.
From the outside, masking may look like coping.
Inside, it can be exhausting.
The person may come home from school or work and melt down. They may need hours alone. They may feel anxious, irritable, frozen, foggy, or unable to complete basic tasks. They may be told, “But you seemed fine earlier.”
That is part of the problem.
Seeming fine is not the same as feeling regulated.
A 2025 systematic review of autistic burnout3 found that burnout may often be linked with debilitating exhaustion and increased disability. Contributors may include sensory and social overwhelm, camouflaging, stigma, everyday life challenges, and difficulty identifying emotions. The review also noted that rest, sensory relief, self-understanding, and support may help recovery.
Support should not be built around asking someone to simply try harder.

Because “just try harder” is not a plan.
Autistic Burnout Is Not Laziness

Autistic burnout can look like a sudden or gradual loss of capacity.

Parents may say, “He used to handle this.”

Midlife can bring a lot of nervous system load.
