Autistic burnout is a state of deep depletion following extended periods of masking, sensory overload, or environmental demands exceeding capacity. It differs from typical burnout in specific ways: loss of skills that previously felt automatic, heightened sensory sensitivity, reduced ability to mask or perform socially, and recovery that can take weeks or months rather than days. It’s frequently misidentified as depression, which means the underlying cause often goes unaddressed.
