They’re closely related but not identical. “High-functioning autism” was never an official DSM diagnosis — it was an informal term describing autistic individuals with average or above-average intelligence. The DSM-5 replaced that framework with support levels. Level 1 is the closest current equivalent, but the two aren’t interchangeable: support needs and cognitive ability are separate considerations. Someone can have level 1 autism and still face substantial daily challenges requiring real support.
