Grey’s Story

From One Mom
to Another

A journey from fear to hope — and how neurofeedback helped my son find his voice.

A Complicated Beginning

My son Grey’s story begins long before his diagnosis. At just nine weeks pregnant, I began bleeding. With two previous miscarriages and a high-risk pregnancy, I prepared for the worst. At the hospital, I heard the words no mother should ever hear: “fetal demise.” No heartbeat. No blood flow. I went home devastated, believing I was losing my third child.

But ten days later, everything changed. The bleeding stopped. Something inside me said to check again. During the ultrasound, the technician went silent — then looked up in disbelief. There was a heartbeat. Faint, only 90 BPM, but there. Against every medical odd, my baby survived.

Months later, Grey was born full-term and beautiful, 8 pounds 6 ounces.

When Something Still Felt “Off”

Grey was a calm, happy baby — but as he grew, milestones didn’t come. He wasn’t signing like his sister. He wasn’t making sounds. I never heard “mama.” Friends reassured me, but something in my gut knew better.

At 19 months, I watched him stand at the fridge, trying desperately to tell me what he wanted. His mouth opened, but only gibberish came out. His frustration — and my heartbreak — told me it was time for answers.

A specialist soon confirmed what I feared: childhood apraxia of speech.

Grey began speech therapy twice a week, working with phenomenal providers and researchers at Ball State. He tried so hard, but progress was painfully slow. Speaking felt trapped inside him.

The Discovery That Changed Everything

When Grey was five, something unexpected happened.

Through my marketing company, I met a neurofeedback clinic. As they explained the science — training the brain to regulate itself — I was captivated. As a registered nurse and neuroscience student, I couldn’t believe I had never heard of it.

I wondered…Could this help Grey? We completed a brain map and learned his brain was firing much too fast — up to 17x above typical for a child his age. We started neurofeedback.

After just one session, everything shifted. On our long drive home, we stopped for dinner. Normally, restaurants were overwhelming sensory chaos. But that night, Grey sat calmly. He looked me in the eyes — really looked at me — for the first time.

I will never forget that moment.

A Voice Unlocked

Week after week, Grey changed. He began writing letters, then words, then full sentences. He formed thoughts out loud. He connected with the world around him. By the end of his 40 sessions, my son — who once couldn’t say “mama” — was speaking, laughing, and learning with confidence.

Today, Grey is 12 years old.
He speaks better than his peers. He reads, writes, plays sports, and has impeccable hand-eye coordination. His transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

Who Grey Is Today

Today, Grey is 12 years old. He speaks better than many of his peers. He reads, writes, plays sports, and has incredible hand-eye coordination. His transformation still amazes me.

And it’s the reason Grey Matters Brain Training Studio exists. I founded this studio because my son’s story is living proof that the brain can heal — that hope is real — and that neurofeedback can unlock what once felt impossible.

My son’s name is Grey, and he matters. And so do the thousands of children, parents, and veterans we serve every single day.

FAQ: Who is Grey?

Grey is the inspiration behind our studio.

Diagnosed as a toddler with apraxia, he struggled to speak despite years of therapy — until neurofeedback changed everything. After his first session, he began to focus, connect, and slowly find his voice. Over time, he learned to read, write, communicate, and thrive beyond expectations.

His journey is the heartbeat of Grey Matters — a place built from a mother’s love, a nurse’s curiosity, and one little boy’s extraordinary resilience.

Ready to See What’s Possible for Your Child?

If you’re a mom who feels something “just isn’t right,” you’re not alone — and you don’t have to guess. A brain map can show exactly why your child is struggling and whether neurofeedback can help them thrive in a medication-free, pain-free way.

Give your child the chance Grey had.

Let’s start by clarifying what neurofeedback is NOT. Neurofeedback is NOT electrical stimulation and does not shock the brain. In fact, it’s completely noninvasive and pain-free. Nothing ever goes to or in your brain.
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that uses the electrical activity of the brain to reinforce optimal brain wave patterns through operant conditioning, thus improving one’s life.
Neurofeedback is a superior solution because it doesn’t just ease the symptoms. It addresses and changes what is causing the symptoms or problems at the source in your brain. Your brain learns how to function differently in a way that relieves problematic symptoms or behaviors.
Neurofeedback training has many scientifically documented benefits both for the brain and body, including stress reduction, improved sleep, better focus and memory, heightened mental clarity, more emotional and behavioral regulation, enhanced cognitive performance, and more. Give it a try today, we bet your brain is capable of the changes you desire!
Yes.
Some clients are able to decrease their medication over time with their prescriber. Grey Matters does not make any medication adjustments.
In a neurofeedback session, qEEG sensors are placed on your scalp, recording your brainwaves and sending the information to a computer in real-time. The computer, through auditory or sound feedback, teaches your brain to perform at optimal levels by a method called operant conditioning, which harnesses your brain’s reward system.
All learning is at a subconscious level. You don’t actually have to “do” anything. With consistent repetition through auditory feedback, the brain learns to self-regulate and makes physiological changes to perform more optimally and will continue to make the adjustments after the initial training. Because it’s a learning process, the results of neurofeedback occur gradually over time.

During a 35 to 45-minute session, you sit comfortably in a chair. You can have a footstool, blanket, and eye mask for relaxation. You are given headphones to listen to the training sounds and can either watch scenic images, read, journal, or kick back and relax. For the younger ones, they can color, draw, read, do homework, or play with Legos.

Consistency is key. The brain requires a minimum of 2 sessions per week to learn and retain new patterns. An average of 35 sessions is needed for the brain to make permanent neuroplastic changes. Remember, your brain is learning, and learning takes time and repetition. If you have multiple diagnoses or are on psychological medications, more sessions may be required for your desired results.
There are no long-term negative effects.

Just like taking your temperature with a thermometer does not deliver anything to your body, a qEEG brain map or a qEEG-guided training session does not deliver anything to your brain – it only reads your brain’s electrical activity. The auditory feedback you hear encourages your brain to “exercise.” So, similar to the variety of feelings after a good workout at the gym, some people experience symptoms such as being more tired or more wired, and few will develop a slight headache after a session. These symptoms go away within hours and are not long-lasting.

Our Brain Coaches are here to assess your training progress, discuss any symptoms you may experience, and provide educated feedback to you during your journey.

Sleep hygiene, a healthy diet, reduced screen time, exercise, and stress management, among many other factors, help you improve not only your brain but also your overall well-being.

Just like riding a bike, once you learn how to do it, your body doesn’t forget. However, if you haven’t ridden your bike in ten years, you aren’t going to be as comfortable or skilled when you get back on it.

Maintenance recommendations are based on individual assessment and will be discussed towards the end of your initial training. Typically, a 1-2 times a month schedule will be recommended. After all, you wouldn’t hire a personal trainer to get in the best shape of your life and then stop going to the gym altogether, would you? Don’t lose your brain gains by stopping altogether either.
